The Suydam Family came to Somerset County N.J. in 1713. the first 50 years in the New World was spent in Brooklyn after coming from Holland on the Rose Tree.
As Dutch settlers they purchased the land and continued to farm. Being general farmers of field crops, livestock, fruits & vegetables, and Dairy. Those earliest Suydams supplied the local New Brunswick residents with fresh food, milk, as well as wool from the sheep.
Many changes came through the years including moving fruit and vegetables to New York City via boats & barges on the Raritan River out of New Brunswick. Cattle became a mainstay along with the dairy cows as the farm began to specialize. In the 1920's to 1960's Brown Swiss Dairy cows were the leaders of farm activities. Sale of milk, and prize winning cows was the priority. In 1960 The Suydam Farm won the highest production herd award for the entire United States dairy industry.
Changes in the local farm community saw the dairy herd sold off and emphasis went to field crops and Hay production. Hay is the biggest crop in terms of acreage and is sold to horse owners, sheep and goat farmers.
In 1994, the latest evolution came as Ryck and DeeJay began marketing vegetables, fruit and flowers to the immediate neighborhood. Greenhouses followed and we now include Christmas Tress, Pigs, lambs and laying hens to the mix.
We are now 13 generations of farmers in America.
Suydam Farms history continues to be made, come be a part of it.
